Why choose soil carbon credits?

Soil carbon credits come with a number of social, environmental and health benefits

  • 1. Positive social impact

Not all carbon credits are created equally.

Woodland carbon projects risk displacing farming communities from the land and can come at the expense of rural livelihoods and food production.

In contrast, revenue paid to farmers from soil carbon credits provides a social benefit by supporting them to transition to more sustainable practices, consequently improving rural livelihoods and safeguarding food security. This is a triple win for farming families, society and the climate.

  • 2. Important environmental co-benefits

Regenerative agriculture substantially benefits nature and increases wildlife compared to conventional agriculture:

    • Increased crop diversity and allowing pastures to flower and set seed benefits pollinators and other invertebrates. This in turn supports the many birds and mammals that depend on them

    • Reducing soil disturbance and ensuring soil is constantly protected by living plants protects against soil erosion and reduces flood hazards

    • Minimising pesticide and fertiliser applications improves catchment water quality

  • 3. Human health benefits

Food grown today with conventional agriculture is on average less nutritious than it was a few decades ago.

As soils have become impoverished through the use of fertilisers and pesticides, so the nutritional value of our food has decreased.

Recent research has shown that regenerative agriculture has a role to play in combating this decline, as food grown using regenerative practices contains more micronutrients, vitamins and other beneficial plant compounds.

  • 4. Scalable

With rising production costs and the removal of agricultural subsidies, the farming community’s interest in regenerative production systems is growing.

We are receiving widespread interest from UK farmers and anticipate working with hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland in the coming years.

This will sequester significant volumes of carbon and provide scalability and continued supply to buyers of our carbon credits.

“The reason I’ve joined Regenerate Outcomes rather than any other projects is really because of the training and the baselining in terms of soil and carbon. That's the absolute winner. There are plenty of people offering the chance to help you get carbon credits, but very few add on the training and baselining as well.”
