Summer Farm Walk Series: Generating revenue from healthy soils

Improving soil health is one of the fundamental goals of Regenerate Outcomes.

Healthy soil means resilient farm businesses, improved plant and animal health, and increased biodiversity both above and below the ground.

Soil can also generate extra revenue by sequestering carbon.

At Regenerate Outcomes we work with farmers to baseline and monitor the carbon in their soil and sell it in the form of high quality carbon credits.

This summer we’re hosting two farm walks with our programme members, giving you the chance to learn more about generating income from healthy soil.

Each event will include an overview of Regenerate Outcomes and a farm walk where you will be able to see regenerative practices in action. Kyle Richardville, from our mentoring partner Understanding Ag, will unpack the principles of soil health and how farms can use key indicators to inform their management.

Westhills Farm, Northumberland

On August 17 we will be hosting an event at Westhills Farm, near Rothbury, Northumberland, which is farmed by Joe and Rachel Henry.

Joe and Rachel produce beef, lamb and milk, pastured chicken and eggs and high-value sheep’s wool.

They have been honing their grass-based production system, utilising methods including rotational grazing, herbal lays and using brassicas and bale grazing for overwintering.

Joe is also a well-respected farm vet and partner in Black Sheep Farm Health, based in Rothbury.

Wexcombe Farm, Wiltshire

On September 5 we will be heading south to Wexcombe Farm, near Marlborough, in Wiltshire, where George Hosier and his family farm beef and arable.

The Hosiers have been farming here since 1920 and the current generation have adopted methods including no till, increasing the diversity of crop rotation and reintroducing livestock onto arable land to encourage beneficial bacterial and fungal populations in the soil.

Our soil carbon monitoring partners Agricarbon will also be on hand at Wexcombe Farm to demonstrate the methods and machinery they use to measure soil carbon stocks to rigorous scientific standards.
